Cyclone Alfred Alert: Keeping Your Dog Safe During the Storm

Writer: Peter Bonney DirectorPeter Bonney Director

With Tropical Cyclone Alfred expected to make landfall near Brisbane between March 5 and March 7, 2025, it’s essential to prepare not only for yourself but also for your Best Mate. Storms can be extremely stressful for pets, and planning ahead will help keep them calm and safe.

Please Think of me, too.
Please, think of me too. I am there for you too.

Recognising some Signs of Anxiety in Dogs

Many dogs experience anxiety during storms due to loud noises, changes in atmospheric pressure, and strong winds. Common signs of anxiety may include:

  • Pacing or restlessness

  • Whining or excessive barking

  • Trembling or shaking

  • Hiding or seeking comfort

  • Panting and drooling

  • Destructive behavior

Recognising these signs early allows you to take action before your dog becomes too overwhelmed.

Natural Ways to Ease Anxiety in Dogs

In addition to creating a safe space, incorporating natural foods and vitamins can help keep your dog calm. It is NOT to replace their meals - they can be small additions.

  • Pumpkin Seeds & Turkey – Both contain tryptophan, which promotes relaxation

  • Sweet Potatoes & Oatmeal – Help stabilise blood sugar levels, reducing stress-related spikes

  • Blueberries & Green Vegetables (Spinach, Kale, Broccoli) – Provide essential antioxidants and magnesium to support relaxation

  • Chamomile & Valerian Root – Can be brewed into tea or found in natural supplements to help with stress

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil) – Support brain function and reduce inflammation-related anxiety

  • CBD Oil & Passionflower – May help with severe anxiety but should be used under veterinary guidance.

These natural remedies can be added to your dog's meals or provided as supplements. This is very important - Always introduce new foods gradually and consult your vet for guidance.

Creating a Safe Environment for Your Dog

A safe, familiar environment can help reduce anxiety. Consider the following steps:

  • Prepare a designated safe space: Set up a quiet room, playpen, or crate where your dog feels comfortable.

  • Use familiar bedding and toys: Familiar scents can provide reassurance.

  • Keep them indoors: Bring your dog inside well before the storm hits to prevent panic or escape attempts.

  • Close curtains and windows: This reduces exposure to flashes of lightning and muffles sounds of thunder.

  • Ensure their outside is safe from flying objects: such as Kennels etc.

Using Tools Like Thundershirts

A Thundershirt is a snug-fitting garment designed to apply gentle pressure, which can have a calming effect on anxious dogs. If your dog has previously shown storm anxiety, introducing a Thundershirt in advance can help them get used to it. You can get these from Petbarn and online too. Also check with your local pet shop.

Managing Your Own Response

Dogs often take cues from their owners. Stay calm and composed to avoid reinforcing your dog’s fear. Avoid excessive soothing, as it can confirm their fear rather than ease it. Instead:

  • Speak in a normal, relaxed tone.

  • Act as if the storm is no big deal.

  • Provide distractions such as chew toys or treat puzzles.

Keeping Your Dog Secure During the Storm

  • Ensure ID tags and microchips are up to date in case your dog panics and escapes.

  • Leash your dog when taking them outside for toilet breaks.

  • Monitor food and water intake, as stress can affect eating habits.

  • Have an emergency kit ready, including food, water, medications, and comfort items.

  • Use their crate when they are really stressed as it is their safe place. Generally I will have mine in my lounge or close to me.

  • Do NOT let them be outside during cyclones as flying debris may hurt them

  • Be aware of Snakes which will move into different areas during bad weather.

  • Use your leash to manage them in a SAFE way. (Click to read more on this)

Consulting a Veterinarian

If your dog experiences extreme anxiety, or you think they may then consult your vet asap. They may recommend calming supplements or medications to help during severe weather events.
