dotoffice solutions

Extract from the book.
Why do dogs like to bark at the postman, for instance? Think about it from the dog's point of view:

postman comes - dog barks - postman goes.

Next day, same thing:

postman comes - dog barks - postman goes.

The dog, with it's clock inside it, waits for this daily interruption to it's sleepy life. In the dog's mind, when it barks and the postman leaves, the dog has successfully frightened the postman away.

'Aren't I a clever pooch! Look how big and tough I am !'

If the barking at the postman continues long enough, the dog will turn what started out as fun into aggressive barking. By not stopping your dog when it first starts to bark, you may condemn your dog to a life of misery. Your dog is not happy when it is barking and can inherit the unmerited title of 'aggressive dog'.
Your once friendly pup is now considered a pest.

You have the power to turn these negative situations into positive ones. If you can gain the cooperation of your 'postie', give him or her a small tasty piece of food to give to your dog. Very soon the dog will look forward to the postman's visit. A negative situation has been turned into a positive one.

Alternatively, when the postman comes, put your dog on a lead, say 'Good Morning' and walk away without any barking. The postman leaves and the dog has not, in it's mind, frightened the postman away. The dog's aggressive behaviour has been reduced because of your control over the situation

Do not allow any more barking. If necessary, take the dog around the block, out of sight, and give it something interesting to do. Dogs refocus very quickly if you change the location and attitude. This is one of the secrets of successful training.
